Sew Katie Jean was recently involved with Moda to sew together a quilt made with star blocks. Each block was signed by the person who made it and their state. They came from all over America, sent to Moda, and then packaged with instructions for our shop.

This is the finished quilt. My mom, Donna Coughlin sewed these blocks together with her little black Singer feather weight. It was her first quilt. Cindy Lloyd did the quilting with her long arm. She used variegated red, white, blue thread on top, and white thread on the bottom of the quilt. Both sides are equally striking with a quilted star motif. And Arlene Irby did the quilt binding. She chose a beautiful solid red color and hand stitched the binding onto the quilt back.

Thank you ladies for donating all of your talents and making this project possible. This quilt is truly made with love, to honor all those who serve.

I am working on finishing a project that I started last weekend. It's not that big or complicated. It's just a table runner. But life gets in the way of our sewing sometimes.

This is the one that I asked Jenn to make for the shop. I am making mine using a set of 5" charm squares of this fabric.

Reunion from Sweet Water by Moda. I love the little banner fabric. And just adore the green, navy and faded yellows. I think I have a sister that might like it too.

I used a cream muslin for the side 2" strips, grey for the back, and the binding will be navy.

One of the prints has a subtle chevron pattern. And that's how decided to use it for the quilting. Cream thread on top, and grey thread on my bobbin.

The stitching is a little harder to see it on the front of the runner. But I just love how it turned out. And I did it! I'll show it to you again when I get my binding on. Maybe I'll even show you a picture of it on my table.

When I first thought about opening a fabric shop, I knew that I wanted to bring my love of all things vintage with me. So I knew that these vintage flower planters were coming into my quilt shop.

I have always imagined them at a baby shower. Sitting at each table for decoration. Or a perfect gift to bring with when you go to visit the new baby.

They could be easily filled with pebbles and have an easy care plant growing inside. Succulents are always the best for me, because I always forget to water. And a new mama can usually only handle low maintenance plants.

Aren't they just each the cutest! More will be coming into Sew Katie Jean soon. So when you see them on my shelf, they aren't just for display. They want to come home with you.

My new teacher, Cynthia, was in my shop this week. We had a fun time together talking about scheduling classes and picking out fabrics.

We needed to pick out 18 fat quarters. Don't you wish you were here? Picking out fabrics for a quilting project is the most fun. I especially love mixing lines. A little Moda mixed in with Benartex and P&B Textiles. It all woks together!

Has it really been that long? Sorry. You must have been wondering where I've been. No where really. Just the holidays, family, relaxing, and forgetting what day of the week it is.

I am having a great time cutting up these beautiful fabrics from Lakehouse Fabrics. This is Holly Holderman's latest, Pam Kitty Morning. It is the softest and has such a sweet, fresh cottage look.

Now it has become my first Block of the Month! The class will be held on the last Saturday of every month. Beginning Saturday, January 28 at 10:30 a.m. You will be making just one block, once a month. Just purchase the pre cut fabric and pattern and the class cost is $10.

OK, can there ever be too much of a good thing? Well, I don't think so. Especially when it is fabric related. So I have to share with you this latest bit of quilting from the Children at Play collection.

Something for the boys. This quilt only took me 2 days to finish. It could have been done quicker, but you know how life gets in the way of our sewing! I modified the pattern #001 from Zan Taylor Designs, just a bit.

I did it in the quilt-as-you-go style. And sewed my binding on totally by machine. I actually missed sewing it by hand. But it was finished sooner. I think I set a new record for myself! How do you like to put on your binding?

I was inspired by looking up pictures to inspire you using the Sarah Jane fabrics. So this is what I have made so far...

A sweet apron, using my all time favorite fabric in this collection. Not really a practical color for an apron, since I do use it to wipe my hands on while I cook, but super cute none the less.

Two pillowcases behind my mannequin (which I named Bridget). And a sweet posy pin using my fabric scraps and a vintage button.

And here is the bottom portion of a simple quilt for a baby boy. I am doing the quilt as you go technique and should finish sewing it this week. I also have a bit of vintage navy ric rac that I will be sewing on, the perfect touch! I cut up extras of this fabric as a kit - if you're interested.

This is a new quilt that I want you to see. It's called The Big EZ. My new friend, Kathy Hilton, came in one day with this surprise quilt for me! Just my colors, how did she know. It is now hanging by my cutting table and everyone loves it. Plus, this pattern with a class will be scheduled soon. Thank you Kathy!

You can also see that I finished this table runner. It has been waiting for the binding for almost 3 months. And in true quilters fashion, I always have at least 3 projects waiting to be finished. Now you can pick up this pattern called Waffle Time with this fabric from Kaye England as a kit. I am in love with this traditional pattern and rich colors. You will be seeing more of her fabrics arriving as I build up this collection.

vintage sewing

My friend Jan went and helped her mom with her yard sale last month. Jan knows what I like and I asked her to keep an eye out for me. And just look at this bit of wonderfulness that she brought into my shop!

It is a big spool of thread and a small sewing machine. Aren't they cute together! I love how the wooden spool is aged so nicely. And the sewing machine is hand cranked with little suction cups on the feet for a bit of stability. I wonder if it was a successful design. A Genero Product.

I love that she had the instruction book too. Made in Long Beach, California. Don't you just love it! Thanks Jan, you are the best.

p.s. both spool and sewing machine are about 6" high, with the spool of thread being a bit taller.

Do you love Atkinson Designs? Terry Atkinson makes these quilt patterns so easy for us to sew up and it can be modern or traditional. Her patterns are always complete and always easy to follow for even the newest of quilters.

Here is what she says about Urban Cabin:

I have been very fortunate in my new business to meet so many neat ladies. Who are talented, fun, and generous. One of those ladies is Sue.

Sue taught this fun class on making Christmas Tree Napkins. The trick is all in the fold. And they each came out so sweet. I never tire of learning to make something new!

And Sue showed us a cute way to add a gold bell at the top of our napkins as a way to give them as a gift. Another nice touch!

I have been to Quilt Market in Houston at least twice before opening my own shop. This is the first time though that I have really, really, really missed being there!

There is so much inspiration and good will every where you look! The quilting community is so generous. And that is what I am missing. The creative energy and being with my sister Mary (and Judith) just makes it the best little vacation ever.

12 days of Christmas

Christmas is coming! It will always be here sooner than you think. With this in mind, I am scheduling classes to get you ready for the holiday season of gift giving. So I have set up a table in my shop to not only show you the classes, but to give you an idea of what you can make on your own.

My next upcoming class will be making these Christmas Tree Napkins. They only use two 1/2 yards of fabric. I think they would be cute with a little bit of ric rac added or some pom pom's! You make four napkins, which are then perfect to be given as a hostess gift, or to be set out on your own sweet table at Christmas. Plus, it is a perfect excuse to get out of the house during the day, instead of doing whatever other chores you might have.

Last Tuesday, my friend Melody Lake, taught a class on the classic Yellow Brick Road Quilt pattern by Atkinson Designs. We chose this sweet fabric from Cosmo Cricket, by Andover. And you can also see the traditional yellow and blue combo on the cover of the Atkinson pattern.

This is the fabulous fabric combination that one of our students made in our class. She picked a range from Robert Kauffman and a great Kona solid. We were so lucky that night to see 4 different fabric choices from each student. Each one so different. I don't know why I didn't take more pictures for you!

art quilts

I have never made an art quilt. But I am always in awe of the talent and amazing creative spirit that is embodied in these true pieces of art.

When I came across this article in the December issue of Quilter's Newsletter, I knew that it had to be shared with you. This is the Lost Heroes Art Quilt.

It commemorates the more than 5,000 service members who died in the wars against Afghanistan and Iraq. At least one person from each state is represented in this quilt.

The quilt features a black and white photo of the fallen soldier, as a child. Then a vintage cloth G.I. Joe jacket is stitched in place.

Like so many art quilts, there are smaller details lovingly sewn in by hand. And this quilt is made to remember these soldiers and their dreams and personal goals for life. Made, "so that our heroes will not be forgotten".

Look what just arrived in my shop this week. Little Apples from Aneela Hoey. She is such a great fabric designer! I met her at Quilt Market last spring and she was giving everyone fake tattoos of the girl in the red coat. I loved that idea! At my shop you can have a fake Hello Kitty tattoo :)

You can see why I love her fabric so much! Just my colors. Moda always has the best booths at Market and make them so fun to visit. Don't you just love this quilt hanging behind Aneela? Looks like one I would love to make.

Aneela also has some whimsical embroidery. I personally love the doll and doll blanket. Even though I don't play dolls any more (except when asked), they look so irresistible to sew up!

Meet Melissa. She made a pillowcase for her girls. And had so much fun doing it! She actually jumped up and down when she finished sewing (don't hate me Melissa, you were just too cute :)

She actually made two pillowcases in one class. And picked out the funnest fabrics! I love the "Aren't you just the tweetest!" by Cosmo Cricket. It looks perfect for a pillowcase. And I love the matching yellow band, it coordinates them perfectly.

To date, Melissa has actually made 3 pillowcases. At my last count anyway. If you don't want to miss out on the pillowcase sewing excitement, there is another class coming up:

If you haven't been by my store yet, or just don't live near by, I wanted to show you my fabulous signs. I am so excited and proud how they turned out.

I think they really stand out and catch your eye on my little side of the street. This is the front window, where you can see right in to my cutting table.

This is my side window that can be seen along the F Street side of the building. The sun shines brightly through this window all day. So the blinds always need to stay closed.

And my little sign over the side entry door. This door is always locked, though. Come around to the front, please. Come around and say hello!

I did a little sewing for my shop. I love this fabric and had to make pillowcases to display for my upcoming sewing class.

Aren't these fabrics just the sweetest! I know I've shown you this collection before, it's obviously one of my fav's. And the pillowcase makes a perfect gift for that person who has everything! You know Christmas will be here before you know it.

My three beauties went off to their first day of school this morning. They all got to school like they were pros. Like it was just another day, no big deal. And they were up early and happy about it. I'm so happy about their teachers!

I wanted to show you some pic's that I took of my girl this summer. The first one you can see of her feet. We had to paint each toe a different color. Only a six year old can truly pull that look off. Especially if they love Hello Kitty.

We also did up her hair. Twisted each section and then put it up in bobbie pins. So messy and cute! Again only a six year old! I also did my hair like this, but did not leave the house :)

She kinda reminds me of Princess Leia in this picture. I do remember doing my hair like this and tying them up with strips of fabric. Letting my hair dry and then, curls. They were so perfect to sleep with at night. Have you ever done up your hair like this? It's so simple!

I am opening tomorrow! And this is my new logo. She is an updated version of my paper doll. Ain't she cute! Today my signs are going up on my windows. I can hardly wait to see them all.

Working on my wrap counter has been one of the biggest challenges for me. It was hard finding just the right thing to fit in with the look that I want for my shop. So we built it with some new, and old pieces. Here's the breakdown: The cabinet came from New Castle. The pale green redwood pillar was in my back yard being weathered for about 5 years. My hub had to cut it in half to get it just right. And the little bit of white trim we bought in Berkeley about 6 years ago. It was just waiting in my garage for the right project. I love how it all came together.

And here is my shop, looking a bit empty. I love this picture, because I can really see the progress that has been made. I am still receiving new fabric every week! It's very exciting.

And here is an after pick. My girl helped me paint this wall. And now my design wall is up. It has created such a perfect focal point. The quilts look like a great piece of art!

This is the happiest student! She was so great at sewing up her first quilt. And really did great on sewing in a straight line.

Which is really no easy task to learn. My new friend Lynn, just told me the neatest idea, and the way that she was taught to practice sewing in a straight line.

Just get a page of lined school paper and put it in your machine. Sew on those lines with no thread and a needle that you are ready to toss out. If you do about 2 pages, you should be all set. I thought it was the best tip I have ever heard! And now I will be adding it to the beginning of each Sewing School class.

Once you see this fabric, you will totally know why I love it so much. I just could not resist buying up this sweet collection.

I met Sarah Jane at Quilt Market in Salt Lake City this past spring. But I totally recognized her from Etsy. She is an illustrator with such a perfect style, that I fell in love with her, her booth, and her fabric line.

She has the best collection of fabric styles for both boys and girls, plus some perfect pieces that mix with both. I will be making up a few things for my shop so you can see them all on display soon.

Isn't this a gorgeous little chair? My mom was going to through it out, and thought I just might like it! It was covered with different fabric of course. Very 80's country looking.

I had a bit of Amy Butler fabric that was just the right amount to cover it all nicely. And the colors just popped, when I put it by my newly painted shelves. Later it will be moved to sit by my cutting table. But I love it where it is just right now.

My shelves are beginning to fill up with new fabrics. This is DeLovely by Cosmo Cricket. I have made a few crafts with this, that are already up in my shop. Remember the embroidery hoops?

And this is Spring Street by Carolyn Gavin of P&B Textiles. I am in for some sewing fun! Soon I will be opening my doors and you can have some fun with me :)

Learn how to make the String Quilt! All you need is your sewing machine and a bag of scraps. I made these 4 squares just going through my fabric stash looking for all hues of aqua and orange. I then decided to use the orange fabric as my center strip. This is just the beginning of this fun quilt. Perfect for first timers too!

Quilt Market has fun booths! And Kona was one of them. They were taking pictures of everyone with these YUM signs. Aren't we cute sisters!

And isn't this quilt just that, yummy! I love quilts like this, modern and something I would totally love to make.

And they even mentioned the Modern Quilt Guild Challenge that our Sacramento Guild participated in. Everyone received one charm pack and designed our own quilt with the pack as the main focus. I was so happy to see it was mentioned!

These pictures were taken over a week ago of my shop. And I am so happy to be sharing them with you. Plus it really shows me that I have gotten some work done! Things have changed and been added since then.

I hope you can tell right away, that this isn't going to be a normal sewing and fabric shop. I want Sew Katie Jean to be an inspiration to sewers and non sewers. I want my customers to feel comfortable bringing fabric into their homes for fun no sew projects like these embroidery hoops. Which is covered in Delovely by Cosmo Cricket and my fun collection of vintage doilies.

I also will be selling some of my favorite vintage finds. Plus using them for display. This green cabinet once held tools in a garage. Now it will hold my extra sewing patterns.

The vintage carriage is not for sale, but is just perfect for showing off my vintage fabric. The little bird cage has 3 birds in it also made with Delovely. It is such a pretty fabric collection. Right now it can all be seen in my store front door.

There is now an opening in my wall. The carpenter did such a great job! And look at those shinny floors :)

This is the front of my shop. My cutting table is going to go right here by the window. Lots of great light.

And these little embroidery hoops are going up on the wall. Just in case you need a little non sewing fabric inspiration.

And the very back of my space. Don't the white walls look great! Such a big difference. The fireplace doesn't work. But offers a great space to decorate year round.

Recently we spent some time in the emergency room. Trying to keep the kids occupied is always a trick. So out comes my camera to take a pic of my girl's first lost tooth.

And then the boys get to play with my handy hot pink post its. This boy likes angry eyes and wolf fangs.

Then a wee mustache and a scruff of a beard.

Finally some fancy earrings for my boy who is almost thirteen! Who knew post-it's could be such fun. Never leave home without them.

I wanted to share with you a few before pictures of my new fabric shop!

It used to be a beauty shop. That's why it is so colorfully painted.

This big pink wall now has a pass through in it and links the back space to the front. The door shown here, is a side door that will remain closed.

And this is part of the bathroom. You know how I love this color! But every little bit of my new shop is now painted white!

My days have been filled with my new venture (and keeping my 3 kids happy during their summer vacation). So more photo updates will follow! Thanks for looking :)

Do you remember the sweet face of this little girl? This is Getty. And this Saturday, June 11th, there is going to be a big craft fair in Sacramento to raise money and awareness of baby Getty and MSA.

This will also be my last craft show. In one more week, I will be moving into my new fabric shop and getting my fabulous creative sewing center all ready for my fabulous shoppers!

I will be handing out little fabric squares and have some quilts, and regular katie jean items all for you to see at Fremont Park. I would love to see you there!

Welcome back to my second Market Monday. I want you to meet Tula Pink! She is just irresistible.

Who else could back their quilts with a huge 6 foot frog. Wearing a pink crown, non the less. He is charming!

She has such gorgeous fabrics. I love how they are full of pictures within a picture. The fabrics are mesmerizing. It's like a little party.

Plus her quilts at market were just as fun. And just look at that stitching! Full of texture bringing life to an otherwise simple quilt.

I would so love to make a raincoat, umbrella, or shower curtain from this fabric! I would love to find an umbrella pattern. Do you think it would be hard to make?

See that little dish by my sewing machine? That is an ash tray. It was my Dad's, one that he got when we lived as a family in England. It is lined with some names of different hotels, and I use it every time I sew. The needles I pull out from my sewing project go in that little white dish. It's a funny way that I remeber my Dad, and make him still a part of my life.

Even though this ash tray is not thrifted, it is something that I often see at thrift shops. Ash tray's always were a part of our decor growing up. We made ash trays at school whenever we made ceramics in school. I think the ash tray is a part of our past culture, something that is now out of fashion.

OK - Here is my big news! I am opening a fabric shop! In Historic Downtown Lincoln. It was the first bank in Lincoln, then the first post office. Built in 1915, now it is to be my fabric shop!

Having my own shop has been something that I have been dreaming about for over a year now. And once I started voicing that dream, everything has just come together perfectly. I'll be sharing all the developments with you as everything progresses. My blog will be changing a bit along with me, being more directed toward fabrics quilting, and sewing classes. I will always be sewing and thrifting so that will continue to be the same.

This is my first post for a my new weekly posting of market monday. I want to introduce you to some of the fabrics, booths, and wonderful inspiration that is Quilt Market.

First I would like to introduce you to Lizzy of Lizzy House. Her new line of fabric is called 1001 Peeps by Andover Fabrics. Isn't that a fun quilt behind her, it looks like dancing starfish! She had such a welcoming booth, perfectly mirroring the theme of her fabrics.

It's all very Moroccan and Moorish. Lovely color ways and just whimsical! It reminds me of my favorite ride at Disneyland, It's a Small World. And I am just killing myself (not really) for not taking more pictures of her booth. Lizzy was the sweetest girl to meet! As was everyone at QM. You just can't help but be inspired by her.

Have you missed me? I have missed you! There is a lot of busyness going on for me right now. Some changes are happening for katie jean. All good ones! But I am going to keep it to myself for just awhile longer. So you will just have to wait.

But one thing that is not changing is my love for thrifting. I found this little tin at a favorite place of mine in Auburn. When I go there I tell my hub that I am going to see Mr. Paul, my boyfriend. The kids know this too! But I suspect that Mr. Paul would blush if I told him of any of this!

But I found this tin at his shop. It has no lid, but just wonderful illustrations all the way around the sides.

Here is the tin bottom. Mrs. Leland's Master Kitchen, Chicago, 1958. Isn't it all just so sweet! I bet she made some tasty treats too!

I also found this quilt top at Mr. Paul's. It was just a few $ too. Under 5, I'm sure. It is very simply made.

And the fabric print is very tiny too and faded in a few places. I am waiting for a warm day to wash it gently in my big tub. And let it air dry inside out of the way of direct sunlight. I think I will bring it to my next Modern Quilt Guild meeting and show it to the girls there too.

I am the luckiest girl in the world to have such beautiful, loving sisters. Plus they are just a blast to be with! We were just having such a great time at Spring Quilt Market, stopping at almost every booth, visiting with vendors, fabric and pattern designers.

For me, going to Quilt Market is all about the wonderful displays! This time, I took over 400 pictures. I am crazy with my camera, having to get every little thing. Soaking up all of the inspiration.

I wanted to show you the tissue holders that I made! I love this new Sherbet Pips fabric so I made a few extra for my sisters and one for Aneela Hoey. They are truly so fun and easy to make.

And with some of the left over bits of fabric, I sewed up a little case for my business cards. I added a snap later in the day. Again it was very easy. I love using up all those fun bits and pieces of cloth!

Now, I am off to get packing.

Sorry that you haven't heard much from me lately. I have just been a little preoccupied with my life. You know, the usual stuff of home and family.

And now I am leaving for a few days to go to Salt Lake City! My first time there, all for the love of Quilt Market. I will be meeting up with my sister Mary, shop owner of Quilter's Eden and my sister Judith.

Do you turn on your computer every morning and are still looking at all the royal wedding pictures? I just can't seem to get enough. They just seem so sweet together. For the hugeness of it all, it did seem very personal and intimate. And real.

My sister made a smaller version of the groom's cake. She saw Oprah talking about it and decided to make it. We laughed that she needed napkins that look like the English flag. Did you have a favorite part of the festivities?

Look what I found! Something that I had never seen before! Isn't that a real treat? It's a beautiful piece of 2 yards of blue fabric, sold as a remnant.

I just love the whole packaging. The string wrap closure and the labeling. It didn't have a price on it, so the shop sold it to me for the original marked price on the packet of 79 cents.

And I just love their business logo. See how the needle and thread make up the name Rother's. And the phone number is LYtell 3-9211.

It also says "The most complete fabric and sewing store". Plus they had sewing classes. Which I love! And I guess they taught how to sew on Knit -n- Stretch fabric. Polyester?

Plus I bought this little packet of notions for $2. More than the blue silk fabric! But the seam bindings and ric rac is always a must for me to buy. You may never know when you will need them.

I have been working off and on this little quilt for a month now. After seeing my stitching on the quilt, my friend calls it Subway Tiles. Cute name! This quilt came to be from a Modern Quilt Guild Challenge. We were given a stack of Robert Kauffman charm squares solids, and I paired some of mine with a pretty Amy Butler print. When I am totally finished, I'll show you more. I'm doing the binding right now. It should be done by this weekend!

And I just had to share some of my Easter pictures with you! These are my 3 beauties. And every Easter our little church has this wooden cross, and during the service, everyone covers it in these gorgeous spring flowers.

Then it is taken out front for all to see. And I just can't resist taking pictures of our family in front of it. This one is of my mom, daughter, and me. I hope you enjoyed your spring holiday as well!

My 21st wedding anniversary is this week. So I bought myself a little present. Ain't it cool! And it is just right for tucking into my pocket.

It is just what I need, perfect for my upcoming trip to Salt Lake City! Yup, I'm going to my first Spring Market. Meeting up with my sisters. I am so excited to see them in 2 1/2 weeks! We'll be the girls giggling in the back of the class.

I shed some tears

This is my 12 year old boy. Yes, he just got braces. Last Tuesday. And I cried a little bit at the dentist office when he was getting his braces put on. I cried those "my baby is growing up" tears. Those tears that I thought I would never be that kind of mom who would cry those kind of tears. But I did.

I thought of him as a baby, all arms and legs, long and lanky. I thought of the 3 years of tears I cried, trying to get pregnant with him. How he used to always hold my hand, and was so shy.
Now he is almost a teen. On his way to adult hood. With me always encouraging him in his building and creativity. And still so thankful that he always asks me to tuck him in at night. My favorite part of the day.

I am writing my thrifty adventures post even later than Stacey did hers. It is actually Friday and I am still going to post this as a Thursday. Tricky me.

I went to the thrift shop this week with my girl friend and my 3 beauties. She actually found this plate and was going to put it back. Then she said it was Texas Ware. Which I kind of have a thing for. I actually have a little bowl that is Texas Ware and is just wonderfully awful! You know what I mean?

I wanted to introduce you to Adrienne of The Vintage Empire, my booth neighbor at the Roseville Antique Market. We have been neighbors for the last three shows. And every time, I come home with a new and unique necklace. Whenever I wear them, I get compliments, and people always ask if it's vintage.

Adrienne is a girl after my own heart and uses vintage elements for her creations. They are made for both the girly girl and the rocker girl. Which I love that they appeal to the diversity of her shoppers.

Adrienne is now also making hats and hair bands. Plus leather cuffs with vintage brooch pins. And you can always find her dyed slips where she adds a bit of extra lace.

The Vintage Empire will also be at the Farm Chicks show this summer! Which is such a huge event. If you go, find Adrienne to say hello. You will come home with a few pieces that you will treasure, season after season.

There are some pictures from my Sunday show in Roseville for The Tattered House show. It was such a gorgeous day. Meeting some blog friends and seeing some faces that I recognized from previous shows. It was great seeing them all!

Shoppers loved seeing this vintage changing table that I use for display. And even though this vintage 1973 Fisher Price Activity Center didn't sell, everyone had to stop and play with it. Oh the childhood memories!

This is my display of shirts and onesies. Everyone really likes looking for their favorite monogram.

I sold this scrappy log cabin doll quilt. It was the first quilt that I ever made!

I also sold my selvage edge pin cushions. I will be making more of those! And my vintage planters were cute all set out together. I want to plant up a few of them with succulents.

I am the girl who likes to look through the patterns at the thrift. Not usually for the patterns themselves, but the pictures. And I love the guy pictures especially! Would you marry a guy, much less date him, if he wore a cape? I like to be the fancy one when we go out. And the guys in their pj's are just a little aloof and sexy!

But when I saw this pattern, I let out a little inner squeal. It was because of the print fabric.

I have a pillow that I made, all hand stitched, using the same fabric. My mom had made an outfit for my sisters, and there was this bit that she had left over. I've had this pillow since about 1976.

When my family moved, my best friend drew me a picture on this little bit of silk. It says "Katie C. is my best friend". And I have just gotten back in touch with this childhood friend last week. Linda Jo is going to get a giggle when she sees this pillow! I wonder if she is going to remember drawing it for me.

I do not scrap book. I have enough problems storing my fabric.

But I do save and gather bits and pieces of papers and ribbons, and such.

So I gathered them all together and sorted each little piece.

Yes, I buy vintage sewing books. They are a little hard to resist. I just love them for the pictures and graphics alone. And just look at all the wonderful things you can learn from 1980.

How to pack for a 5 day trip. This will help since I'm going to Salt Lake City in May to see my sisters. I am already packing in my mind, deciding what to wear, and what else I may need to buy before I leave.

You can teach your little cute pixie friend how to slay dragons and teach your cat not to scratch at your polyester pants. This might even be some great inspiration for a halloween costume. I would just need a bigger spool. Like to my ankles.

And from 1972 look at all the things you could learn. I especially love the doll over the toilet paper. It's a classic.

A perfect hostess gift. Just crochet a poodle to cover a good bottle of whiskey and pop on over to your neighbors house. You will be welcome back anytime. And maybe each time you can crochet a different animal for each bottle you bring. Crochet a menagerie of bottles for the bar.

Make a tulle swan for your daughter's bed. Or maybe it's a swan hat. Perfect for a sweet 16 birthday present. Nothing else says I love you, like scratchy pink tulle.

And who wouldn't love a fur rat doorstop! I think it would be made a little cuter if it was called a mouse. Mice are cute. Rats, not so much. My 6 year old daughter actually wants to make this. I bet she thinks it's a mouse too.

This is a 1975 book of things to make for children. Not by them. Not even with them. But it does have some great stuff. Sure to keep you busy, making things for your children.

Just look at this doll house! It's nicer than the house I live in. I bet the doll's even dress better than I do. Wouldn't this be great to find at a thrift though. Or more likely an estate sale.

And a patchwork dog. I know I have seen this on etsy. Too bad this picture isn't in color. The fabric looks fantabulous!

Emma, The Tin Thimble

Last Friday night I visited The Tin Thimble for their anniversary party slash student art show slash open house. I stayed because of the beautiful food!

Sorry if these pictures look like half eaten food. But it was all so delicious with 3 wonderful cheeses, and breads and crackers, perfect pears and grapes. And there was local wines as well.

A few of my katie jean items were on display for the art show. But this beautiful merino wool rooster was the show stealer for me. It looks like a painting. Such gorgeous vibrant color.

Their next big event is going to be the annual fashion show. It is such a fun day of summer handmade clothing. Saturday, June 4th. Do not miss it!

I just had a pretty great family weekend. Spending a lot of time with my kids, it was pretty sweet. I even got a bit of a sunburn from watching them play outside most of the day with all the neighborhood kids.

And this is how my day started. With popovers! I love eating them with butter and orange marmalade. They are just perfect that way. Plus coffee.

My husband made them for me. Knowing what sweet memories they have for me, of my sisters making them :) Just look at the New Cook Book that has the recipe. The cover has even been torn off.

Well, now you know how spoiled I am at home. I can never complain about me husband because of the things like this that he does.

p.s. you do not need custard cups or a special popover pan to make these. I have small kitchen storage so I try not to buy those extras. Trust me, a muffin pan works perfectly.

I have been trying to be a good girl and stay on task. Sewing each day something new for my shop. And using the pile of fabrics that I showed you the other day. Why is it so hard to stay focused? Well I did get this cute tie onesie finished. My favorite part is doing the hand stitching with brown thread. It just feels good to be adding that little touch, plus it just looks good. I am also making a stuffed frisbee dog to go with it. I have been so drawn to yellow these past few days. Not usually a favorite color of mine, mostly because I look awful in it. But now it makes me think of spring, butter, and fresh eggs.

This week I was walking through my local Goodwill and wasn't finding a thing! Has this ever happened to you? Well I was getting kinda bummed about it too. Who wouldn't, right?

Until I got to the back of the store. I found three different pieces of vintage fabric! Such a score for me!

There was a time when I declared that I was only going to use vintage fabric. Well, you know that that did not work. Who can not resist all those beautiful new fabrics.

But now I have this new collection to deal with. So this sweet yardage is being cleaned with hot water and Oxy Clean. And I am dreaming of what to make with it.

my fabrics

I went through my fabrics yesterday looking for a little inspiration on what to sew up for a fair I am doing in April. I pulled out a bunch of different prints.

Sorted them out by what goes with what. Decided on a bunch of different things to make, beginning with bibs.

But before I cut and sew, some ironing must be done. So I ironed all that I needed to make a variety of bibs.

And made this little shirt instead!

It will be in my shop today! Tomorrow I think there will be a stuffed frisbee dog to join it.

student art show

I went to The Tin Thimble on Sunday afternoon to teach my placemat and napkin sewing class. I had such a nice time sewing with my student and visiting with Sharon and Claire. They are such a generous pair of sisters. And truly everyone whether sister or daughter who works there is the best!

And they also throw a great party! To celebrate their 4 year anniversary they are hosting their 2nd annual Student Art Show. It would make a great girl's day out to visit them on April 1st, 2nd, and/or 3rd to see what they will be displaying. And to see their great collection of vintage and new fabrics.

If you haven't been there yet, it is the perfect time to go. They are located in Loomis at the High Hand Nursery on Taylor Road. The gardens there are just beautiful right now with blooming trees and flowers. My kids especially like the Koi pond!

And if you have been looking for a few things in my etsy shop, you will find them now at The Tin Thimble. So I am working hard today to add some new replacements.

vintage sheets

I have been practically hoarding my vintage sheets. Buying them, but then just holding onto them. Which is silly really. Because they are always so much bigger than the new yardage that I buy.

But I was finally able to cut up a few to participate in the daily giveaway at the vintage sheet blog. And what a great reason to cut them up. Just to make something cute and then give it away. Just sharin' the vintage love!

I made the Disappearing Nine Patch doll quilt. It turned out bigger than my usual doll quilt. 17" x 17" actually. So it can really be used for not only the best behaved dolly, but also for the best baby. You decide.

getty owl giveaway

Baby Getty has the prettiest and biggest blue eyes. She is celebrating her first birthday with a ton of crepe paper decorations . And she has SMA1. An inherited desease that causes progressive muscle degneration and weakness in newborns.

Today also happens to be Getty's birthday! And she would like you to help her celebrate with a few extra (10) presents. Who doesn't love a party? Especially a girl's 1st big party!

Some very cool friends like Stacey have arranged for some very cool giveaways to be planned through out the day. Getty loves spreading the love. And some of those gifts I hear might be owl related.

Last week my thrifty adventure was a complete bust. With my computer not working and all. And with last Thursday being St. Patrick's Day I wanted to share something green with you. Well it was not meant to be. Until now.

So I searched my house for something thifted and green and this is what I found. My trusty trash can that I keep in my sewing room. It catches all of my thread and bits of fabric that is too tiny for scraps. I love to see it fill up, because it means I have been hard at work!

It is such an awful green color and so groovy with the flowers on the front. I just love it and could not walk away from it. Even though the price said $12. I'm sure I didn't pay that much for it. Because I did buy it at a place that I frequent so much, the owner knows my name and asks about my kids and sister-in-law when I am in there. Which really isn't a thrift shop. But a great junk shop that I tell no one else of, because I love it so! And if I do happen to share it with you, then that means I love you too.

tiny 9 patch

Have you been following the daily giveaway's over on The Vintage Sheet Blog? Each day, a giveaway! It is very cool and I have found so many great blog friends there too.

And of course I am participating! I will be making a special doll quilt using just vintage sheets. I have such a great stash and I love each piece in there.

But before I cut anything up, I wanted to do a practice quilt and a book review too. After I saw the Dainty Doll Quilt in Sew Darn Cute, I just had to give it a try. See how it's made with vintage sheets too, love it!

So I pulled out these little squares of Japanese fabrics and gave this little quilt a try. And I loved it just so much! The instructions are so simple and easy to follow that I am now on quilt #3 of the Disappearing Nine Patch.

I am so loving the quilting. I am still so surprised that I do. And if you like the tiny quilt, perfect for your fav doll, then just visit my shop. You can see the fabulous and finished version there.

90th birthday

Last weekend we were heading to the mountains. Then we heard of all the snow that was coming. Our plans then changed and I was so glad that we didn't have to take that 4 hour drive! It was like a huge weight being lifted. I was so happy! My kids, not so much. They of course would have loved it.

My father-in-law, Eldridge Trott, had just turned 90 years old. We were to celebrate his birthday with a huge family and friends party. But, as I said, our plans changed. And thankfully the party turned out to be held locally and we were all together as originally planned.

The invitation was my responsibility and contribution to the party. So of course I turned to etsy to find the perfect invite. Where I found a wonderful vintage travel poster inspired card from Orange81. Eldridge is known for writing, backpacking, and his faithful companion, Sweetie. This invite was just the one for him, shown with a dog and his master in the mountains. It was perfect and I loved having found it on etsy.

The invitations also said "no gifts please". But I couldn't resist making him a pillowcase when I found this fabric at The Tin Thimble. My f-i-l is from Texas and has currently finished writing his western novel. It was perfect. I even did some hand stitching around the pillowcase cuff, with brown thread to give it a more western feel. He did love his birthday gift and promised to sleep with it that same night.

i'm back

So happy that I married someone with a ton of experience in IT (and he loves to cook!) It did take about three days to get my computer all cleaned up and back to work. Which was so hard for me. What am I supposed to do without my computer? I'm sure you understand.

Of course I got some sewing done! So happy with that. Got some things crossed off my list. Would you like to see?

Here is my almost completed quilt top for the SMQG fabric challenge, I told you about. I just love the array of colors in this Amy Butler fabric. It's hard to believe all of the different colors that are in this print, until they are separated out by these little fabric squares from Robert Kauffman.

I think I will just bind this up with one of my favorite solids, no sashing. And then back it in the same Amy Butler print. I will show it to you again, all finished.

And remember, I still have this bit to do something with. I separated out my stack to use with these 2 different fabrics. Now I am having so much fun fooling around with them, that I want a whole new pack of those charm solids.

new fabric challenge

This last Saturday I went to my monthly SMQG meeting. And there were a few more new faces. Which I love that our group is growing. And a new monthly challenge was made!

The wonderful people of Robert Kauffman have invited all of the Modern Quilt Guild's to sew up something quilt related with one of their Kona charm packs. And the pack is all in solids.

So each person in our guild has been given one stack of these sweet rainbow of colors. Aren't they just gorgeous! I got to working on this challenge that very day, looking online for some fresh inspiration. I can't believe that I started sewing the next day after that. Could not help myself!

So I wanted to give you a peek at what I have come up with so far. Both of these prints are from Amy Butler. She has such a big range of color in both of these prints, I thought they would be fun to use!

My thrifting days are often done on a whim. Just running errands and I have some extra time. Stop by the nearest thrift shop. Usually it's Goodwill. And this day I was out with my kids and it was the same thing. My eldest needed xray's on his teeth (for braces) and we had some extra time coming home before dinner.

My kids get a $1. spending limit. And this time I held firm. Especially since I had all 3 of them with me. But, they do also get to pick out a book. So it is a firm $2.50. Me, no spending limit. See it, love it, buy it. Because it will not come my way ever again.

And that is how I brought home this perfect vintage hobnail milk glass lamp for $6. I wasn't even sure if it worked. I didn't ask to check it. But the more I looked at it the more perfect it was. It stayed in a bag at home for a week. And when I did pull it out, it was because I had found this perfect lampshade in one of my closets. I told my girl it was going in her bedroom. But I am just too in love with it for now. It will have to stay in my sewing room for a bit longer.

A few days ago I received this delightful and fun fabric in the mail. And yesterday I started to cut it up! Which is so hard for me to do. When I get a new fabric that I love I just want to stare at it and never part with any little bit of it. But, cut it I did!

bit more purple

I think I have told you before that I am not a lover of purple. Even though I did just buy that purple couch! But this fabric was just gorgeous and I could not resist it's vibrancy.

So I made this sweet purple library bag. I spent the day writing a pattern for it too. So much tougher than I thought it would be. It is fun and easy to sew, but hard for me to put it in words. I had to sew, and write and got a little frustrated. And walk away for a bit. But I did it!

It's also a reversible bag. And using two complimentary prints on the inside make it fun. It's big enough for you, or your girl, whenever you're ready for a sleepover, not just for a trip to the library.

This has been my biggest thrift purchase ever. Both in size and dollar amount.

I actually saw this little couch last week. And didn't think much of it at the time. But I ended up thinking about it all weekend, dreaming of where I could fit it in my already full house.

So I went back on Monday morning and it was still there. Just sitting there all covered in its majestic purple velvet. With pure Victorian style. Ready to be painted white and covered with new fabric to go in my bedroom. I'll have to find some inspirational pic's to share with you. I am just so excited to get to it!

A little rickety, but such gorgeous details and pretty much intact. Plus, I asked for a better price and got $100 off. And yes, I told my hub that I was going to buy it. He is just worried about when it will be out of his garage.

When I saw this gorgeous face, I could resist no longer. I buy what I love!

mother daughter sewing classes

Ever since I taught the little group of girls how to sew by hand, their Moms and some others, began asking me to teach them to sew. They have also asked to do a sewing class with their daughters. Such a sweet idea.

The girls at The Tin Thimble were up for the idea. And we have set dates for three classes. All on a Sunday. March 27, April 3, and April 10 from 1-3. By then, there should be gorgeous spring days.
I wanted to share with you here two of the projects I have finished already. The first class we will be making a reversible placemat and a napkin. This great fabric I bought at the Tin Thimble and had enough to make extra napkins for my home!

For the second class I used a new technique for creating pillowcases. I've heard that you will spend more time picking out the fabric then sewing up the actual pillowcase. And once I made it for myself, I believe it!

The third class will be a reversible bag. Which is so fun and easy. Perfect for taking your books home and back to the library. This is the project that I am sewing up today. So you will have to wait to see the pictures. But each class is perfect for the beginning sewer. So I hope to see some new faces in there!

sweet menagerie

My sister sent me some fabric from her shop, Quilter's Eden about 3 weeks ago. It's called Menagerie and it is from one of our favorite fabric designers in Australia, Melanie Hurlston of Melly & Me. Our other favorite Australian designer is her sister Rosalie Quinlan. (of course they are sisters!)

Mary asked me to sew up a few baby bibs. So this is what I sent her. I had fun sewing these up. The elephant bib reverses so there is an elephant applique on the back of the flannel polka dots. And the monkey bib reverses also to a flannel polka dot, but it is sewn using my favorite aqua color of thread for a nice little added detail.

Now the bibs used only half of the fat quarter I was sent. So I had to make up some sweet little booties too! I love this little shoe pattern. It features the elephants on one side and the monkeys on the other.

I still had fabric left! Can you believe it. That is one of the best things about creating tiny things for tiny babies. They take tiny bits of fabric. So I did a little fun applique on a long sleeve onesie. It gets cold in Minnesota don't you know!

I am also being sent more of this Menagerie collection, featuring owls and bees. Love new fabrics!

I see more bibs and booties in my future.
